Mens 3 v Lymm 3s -2-0 Win

Crewe 3s hosted Lymm this weekend. Ready to get back into form after last week’s defeat; a focused and determined Crewe team from the start, applied pressure across the entire pitch. Lymm found a couple of opportunities buts Evan Bowyer was able to keep everything away. After battling to keep the ball in the opponents half Crewe found a short corner opportunity, a well rehearsed routine saw Martin Woodhart pass out to Johnathan Blackwood who took a clean strike and put Crewe ahead. Crewe had a few more opportunities but we’re unable to convert. The second half saw Crewe start extremely strong and within the first 5 saw Steve Douglas fire a quick strong ball across the front of the goal which Nick Marshall picked up on a deflection to put Crewe ahead. The desperation seemed to get to Lymm and resulted in one green, two yellows and one red card being awarded throughout the rest of the half. Crewe was strong and played a smart game to draw a frustrated Lymm around the pitch and a few more opportunities were had but nothing could be found. MotM awarded to Evan Bowyer for excellent keeping and giving Crewe a clean sheet. Final results 2-0

Mens 2s v Wilmslow 4s 5-2 Win

The men’s 2s faced a solid Wilmslow team at home this week. Crewe dominated the first quarter with Bruce Forster in fine form after his return from injury. Capitalising on space in the D and working well with his co-forward Jimmy Farschi, Bruce secured 3 early goals to put Crewe in a commanding position. Wilmslow struck back before half time with 2 goals setting up for a nervy second half. Crewe settled in for a battle and created lots of opportunities whilst defending solidly. Bruce eventually managed to scramble home a 4th to give us some breathing room before Jimmy Farschi found space to secure the 3 points for Crewe with a crisp finish. Final score Crewe 5 Wilmslow 2. Iain Ford, for his work rate in midfield, and Bruce contested man of the match this week with Bruce narrowly edging it for his clinical display up front.

Mens 1s v Alderley Edge 2s – 5-3 loss

This week Crewe made the short away trip to Alderley Edge for their 3 away trip in 4 weeks. Crewe started well on what is a very wet and quick pitch, early exchanges saw little clear cut chances until Jack Townsend managed to manufacture some space in the D to fire a backhanded shot in to the roof of the net much to the surprise of all the team, including himself! Some poor discipline allowed Alderley to gain some territory and won the first short corner of the game which they managed to convert passed goal keep Matt Greasby. 1-1 at half term and Alderley upped the anti after the break with wave after wave of attack which Crewe managed to defend thanks to some great work from brother Dom and Josh Barker. However the next goal did go to the hosts, infant they got 2 in quick succession. Up stepped Jack Townsend again with another fine backhand finish to give Crewe a glimmer of hope, Phil Robinson then arrived late in the D to strike a thunderous slap into the bottom corner to make it 3-3 with 10 minutes to go. Thanks to some quick forward work Alderley managed to win a penalty stroke which goal keeper Matt Greasby got nowhere near to put Alderley ahead. Fitness began to tell with the 15 men of Alderley relentless in attack scored their 5th goal to put the game out of sight. next week is the last game before a much needed Christmas break, Didsbury away.

Ladies 3s v Bowdon 5s – 3-1 loss

Ladies 3s were away to Bowdon 5ths this week and Crewe were fully focused and dedicated from the start of the game and fought as a team until the end. We were playing some lovely hockey and pressing hard to show the opposition our skill. Unfortunately Bowdon were quick to respond and got there first of the game to go ahead. Crewe responded well showing some dynamic passing in the attacking area and got the return from a great pass from paula for Molly to strike pass the keeper to draw level at half time. Going into the second half we were feeling confident and pressing hard as a team, Claire Duncan and April Roome were creating great runs down the sideline, but Bowdon stopped Crewe in the attack. After some controversial umpiring Bowden got the second goal from a short corner strike. With 20 minutes still to go we suffered a blow of injuries which resulted in another goal for the home side; but we never gave up and gave our full commitment to the end and very proud of players stepping out of their positions to support the team. Amanda got player of the match saving some crucial goals to keep the score line just 3-1 at the end. The score didn’t reflect the true commitment of the team today, lots to learn and take to training next week.

Ladies 2s v Bowdon 3s – 3-1 loss

After playing top of the League last week, the Ladies’ 2nd team we’re up against Bowdon’s 3rd team who were 2nd in the League. We were expecting a well drilled and clinical side and that’s what happened in the first 10 mins. They put away 2 chances and went 2-0 up. Vagrants didn’t panic, nor feel the need to do anything different, they concentrated on playing their style of hockey. Bowdon converted another just before the half time whistle. The Vagrants took the momentum of the last 15 mins of the first half into the second half plus some. Delightful passes and players working hard off the ball gave Vagrants an opportunity to score and so they did through Shami Ahmed. The final score was 3-1 and the Ladies’ 2nd team could be very pleased with their 2nd half performance. They attacked in numbers and GK and Player of the Match, Grace Leonard was on fire making some really crucial saves. Onto Northrop Hall next week before the Xmas break.

Ladies 1s v Alderley edge 2s – 4-0 loss

Crewe Vagrants Ladies 1s travelled to The Edge to take on a young Alderley Edge team. Alderley Edge started the stronger team and were awarded a short corner within the first 2 minutes of play and the ball was fired in the bottom left hand corner, taking Alderley Edge 1-0 up. Within open play from quick passing from Alderley Edge, it soon became 2-0. Crewe got back into the with game some excellent passing between Lisa Holland and Jenny Zwijnen down to Zoe Franklin and Marianne Hunter up front and we awarded a short corner but were unlucky to covert. Crewe’s defence of Gilly Gibbs Blythe, Emma Bostock and Helen Glanville absorbed more pressure from Alderley Edge but unfortunately, they were able to score again going into half time 3-0. Crewe returned to the field with drive and passion, working as a unit which created opportunities for Izzy Escott and Emily Ford to work pass players and send the ball to Becky Burndred and Sheridan Marsden but Edge’s defence were able to stop any strikes on goal. Some excellent play from Dionne Johnson in the middle helped the defence to keep Edge out, with Alison Smith making some great saves. Alderley Edge continued putting pressure on managed to convert the final goal of game, finishing 4-0. Next week Crewe host Wrexham, currently 2 points above Crewe, with a 2:30pm push back.

Ladies 4s v Runcorn 2s – 4-0 loss

Having been beaten 8-0 at the start of the season by Runcorn who are currently second in the division, we knew that we would have a fight on our hands. With an attacking spirit, we stormed their half of the pitch, pressing high and putting them under pressure for a good proportion of the time. Short corners were awarded against us of which Runcorn converted three in the first half. This is normally a skill at which we excel but trying out a new routine had its challenges. By half time, we were losing 3-0 but this did not deter us. Lots of discussion during the break and players energised to continue the game with the same zeal. Becky Holman who was awarded MOM worked tirelessly for the whole game, covering a lot of ground and getting the ball into the D. A solid Runcorn defence meant that the ball was cleared constantly. Mell Powers who is growing in confidence and improving game upon game, was getting stuck in with interceptions and neat passes to her teammates. Having been injury- free for a few games, Alison Kellett took a blow to the mouth and had to sit out for the rest of the game; thankfully no broken teeth! It was end to end hockey and Runcorn scored again from a straight strike. Having remembered the goal in the last nine seconds last week, we persisted with our attack and there were some near misses. Every week we are improving and new things are being learnt. Next week, we travel away to play Sale 3s.
