Sunday Hockey - the start of the EH competitions

5 Nov 2018 by Crewe Vagrants Hockey Club

Under 18s

Emily Ford, Grace Leonard and Lucy Morris had an early start from Liverpool Airport flying to play the Isle of Man U18s as part of a welcoming Deeside squad. The opposition started strong, capitalising from a short corner in the first 15 minutes, but the team started to gel with players getting used to other! Great passes & brilliant use of the width driving down both sides of the smurf turf. The match was tough with lots of tackles & pressure put on us, we remained 1-0 at half time. Following a second goal from the opposition,we fought back with a short corner of our own; injected into Emily who used a straight strike to the bottom right for Lucy Morris to reverse deflect it into the goal leaving us fighting hard at 2-1, but it wasn’t to be for the travelling team with the final score 3-1. The girls “Thoroughly enjoyed the match and playing with new people”.

HA Cup O40s Tier 2 Vets 1 – 14 Alderley Edge

We knew we would be up against it when we were drawn against last year’s finalists, who only lost out last year to Canterbury after extensive penalty shuffles, in the first round. The first half saw a lot of effort & chasing from everyone in the Crewe team against a very slick and quick-moving side, who had obviously played together extensively, judging by their speed of movement, especially off the ball. We conceded four goals in the first half but turned round with some hope & early in the second half won our first penalty corner, which was converted with a low drag flick from captain Gareth Pask under the frustrated keeper. This stung the opposition into raising their game & once they started to widen play to use the full width of the pitch we struggled to contain them. They attacked with real pace, & scored with ease, running in ten goals in the second half despite constant effort from all the squad, including all our subs, we could not half the flow of goals. It was a lesson in total hockey & despite the difference between the sides we fought to the end with Stevie Bourne back from injury & proving to be a thorn in the side of their defence for the whole game.
