Wise heads, goals, new comers, goals, moments of pure gold, and goals!

Ladies 1st (4-1 win)
The average age of the Ladies 1st has been commented on in previous seasons…and the number has come close to 30! The team that took to the pitch against newly promoted, Didsbury Greys consisted of an impressive 5 over 40 players, pushing the average age to…!! Going 1-0 down didn’t concern the wise heads and the spritely youth! The 2 MMU students (EJ Macleod and Marianne Hunter) combining twice for Marianne to score the equaliser and the third goal. The second goal was stabbed home by Zoe Franklin, from a scramble in the D for Vagrants to hold the advantage 3-1 at half time. The second half could have/should have produced a ‘goal of the season’ contender…but for a Vagrants stick to take the ball cruelly off target! Dionne Johnson came into possession of the ball at the top of the D, and smartly lifted the ball over a number of players and watched in disbelief as Shami Ahmed directed the ball away from the open goal! Wrong end, Shami! Making amends with 10 mins to go was indeed Shami…diving at the far post to divert the ball into the back of the net from a Marianne cross. Next week’s opposition is another newly promoted side, Sale at home.

Men’s 1st (5-1 win)
The Men’s 1st team took on newcomers to the league, Colwyn Bay over the weekend and produced an impressive display. Two early goals from Pete Cornell settled the nerves and Vagrants could have amassed a big goal total in the first had penalty corner routines been going to plan. Soon after the break 2 goals became 3 – courtesy of Ben Read from a penalty corner! Things were looking up! Then came the usual scrappy 10 minutes, which is occurring more often than desired, and Colwyn Bay took advantage to pull a goal back. With 10 minutes to go, this season’s new recruits put the game to bed with Tom Bolton and Hendrick Willenbrink nestling in from close range to make the final score 5-1. A visit from the City of Manchester Men’s 1st team next weekend.

Ladies 2nd (3-1 win)
If there was a result to produce lasting grins on the faces of all involved with the 2nd team, this was the game. Total commitment from all players resulted in 3 points and puts the 2nd team top the league! Once the tactic of how to quieten one of the Chester players had been worked out, Vagrants dominated play. Vic Lee, Beth Hughes, Steph Thompson and Nat Stevenson working well as a defensive unit. All 3 goals coming from penalty corners…that Wednesday night practice must have paid off!! Vic, Sheridan Marsden and Nat getting on the score sheet. No game next week for the 2nd team next week. Great first quarter, girls.

Men’s 2nd (2-0 loss)
After a strong start to the game the Men’s 2nd team went 1-0 down to a breakaway goal with a smart finish from the Prescott forward. Vagrants continued to press hard, but again were caught out on the break for the second goal 10 minutes into the second half. Chances were created by Nathan Watson and Shane Warren but unfortunately Vagrants could not find that elusive goal. Many positives to take forward from a decent result against a strong table topping Prescott team. Over to Manchester next weekend to play against the City of Manchester Men’s 2nd team.

Men’s 3rd (6-0 win)
A comfortable 6-0 victory for the Men’s 3rd team over the weekend with the score line kept respectable by an outstanding performance from the Alderley Edge goalkeeper. He pulled off a number of saves to deny Jamie Escott and new comer Bruce. There were a couple of contenders for player of the game: Chris Habesch with 2 well taken goals, however Chris’ goals were topped by the rarity that is a ‘Jamie Escott assist from within the D’!!! No saves were required to be made by Vagrants GK, Minsh, who may threaten a run upfront himself if results continue. A trip to Sale for the Men’s 3rd team next weekend.
